Mergress Adjustable Safety Razor
The Mergress Adjustable Safety Razor has been an iconic razor since 2006. Eric (Mer) Maier, takes a Merkur Progress razor and improves upon it by adding a machined Stainless Steel adjustment knob, and a "BullGoose Blue" adjustment dot while also calibrating the adjustment and smoothing out the action. It is a very smooth shaver that looks great while displayed in your shave cave and can be dialed in anywhere from mild to wild depending on your shaving preference and beard type.

I had read a few reviews & took the plunge to buy a Mergress Adjustable to be shipped to the UK.
It arrived safely at the week end at was great to use from the first shave. I have now been using it for 1 full week & trying the different settings on different parts of my face. The result is fantastic, a really close, smooth shave with just a single pass and no sore patches or razor rash even around my neck.
The razor looks great and has a nice solid heavy feel.
Definitely recommend the Mergress to others.
This is the second Mergress Adjustable Safety Razor I have owned. The last one seems perfectly functional (have had it for a few years) but I noticed recently that the blade doesn't align with the edges of the razor. I thought maybe I misused it over time, so ordered a new one. It has the same flaw: the blade is off by a fraction, slightly diagonal to (not parallel) to the edge of the blade. Works well enough though, and I'm too lazy to send it back... and even with a flaw I still recommend it over a cartridge razor.
Mergress gave me a nice shave but in my opinion the Parker Variant gives me a nicer shave.......
The numbers on the dial do not line up well - when screwed all the way down to the least aggressive position the dial goes past the #1 position, all the way back to the five which is misleading....
I do own the longer version, as the shorter wasn't available at the time I bought mine. The original Progress always lacked somewhat of precision, which also shows in the plastic knob. A renowned company like Merkur should not use bakelite in it's components... And there comes Eric, takes the razor apart, finetunes it and mounts a stainless know. W o w , what a difference, Adjustable razors, I own FUTUR, Fatboy, even VISION, but resultwise and with my technique, my MERGRESS beats them a l l . One can even say, it requires just 1 (one) razor, so can save tremendeous money. But thets the dilemma of all beginners, which grow specialists and end up with 'knowledge'... OnOn, buy yrself a MERGRESS...
A little detail before the shave or lead in to my shaving style. First off my neck area like many is tough to shave without irritation. I have tried many razors and diffrent methods to deal with this. I have had good or best results with the 39c, 37c, 34c and the ATT s-1 razors.
My thought was and the issue is I need a more aggressive razor on the first pass and a less aggressive on second and clean up pass. I also have found the way my hair grows on my neck I have to make the first pass against the grain with a sharp blade in a mid aggressive razor for best results.
I know this runs against the normal way of thinking with whet shaving. I have tried every way out there and this is what works for me to get the best shaves on my neck area. Any other way gives more irritation.
Now to the shave,
* Prep- a shower and face wash. Then a little pre shave cream applied.
* Lathered up.
* New Mergress short handle razor set on #3 for first pass with a new Astra SP blade loaded cold water rinse on razor during shave.
* Second pass and touch up Mergress razor set on # 1.5 (no third pass done) cold water rinse on razor during shave.
* warm water splash for clean up to face followed by cold water rinse and face lotion
The end result was a excellent smooth comfortable BBS shave with no irritation to the neck area at all. I think being able to dial the Mergress razor down to a lower setting is going to be the way to go for me. I was very impressed with this superb razor. To date this Mergress razor is the best shaving razor I have had in my hand, excellent quality.
Some may consider the below over kill but for me it is worth the effort to keep the razor like new.
I disassembled and cleaned the razor well with hot water and wiped down. Then added a few drops of light machine oil to the razors mechanism to keep all functioning well.
Great Shaves To All,
The quality of the Progress the beauty of the Mergress !!!
What a great razor!! Worth every penny imho. Unbelievably high build quality, it’s aesthetically a very handsome razor that will fit anyone’s collection, and the shaves are oh so comfortable. Blast your face under the shower head to get your beard well hydrated, apply lather, wait half a minute or so to let the lather soak in some, and the razor will glide right through your beard with essentially zero resistance. A splash of witch hazel (or your favorite shave balm) afterward and your face feels great for the entire day.
Highly recommend this razor. Lets see, down the road gotta have one of those pimped out Bling jobs too….
I had the Progress for about 8 years and it was always in my rotation. About 4 months ago I dropped it- and it exploded on the floor. I thought no big deal- I will use my Fatboy- my Stealth Slant and 34c. Well I ended up missing my Progress and bought the Mergress. Perfect weight, well made and truly gives a great shave. It really is the only razor you will ever need.
MERGRESS mejora mucho en my opinion la merkur progress en el peso,balance,aspecto....El envio a Europa muy bien sin problemas.......Good job PHIL
Great product. I took it apart, and noticed a light coat of machine oil on interior parts. That alone let me know that I was dealing with a quality mod. Shaves great. Looks better.
Very smooth shave using Astra blades highly recommend !
I reviewed this razor just after I bought it, three months ago. It has become my razor of choice for every day shaving, smooth, efficient and easy on the skin. I don't remember ever cutting myself with this and I get quite a few shaves on a single blade. Right now I am using a Treet Durasharp for the 6th time, and feels like there is at least another shave with this blade. Great razor!
Outstanding razor. I have tried several DE and SE razors looking for the best shave during my experience with the hobby of wet shaving. I have owned one of these in the past and this is one of the few razors I have purchased again. Combine this razor with a feather blade and for me, it produces the closest shave I have had, period. Highly recommend this razor! Buy it, you will not regret it. The fit and finish is perfect with the mergress compared to the cheaper feel of the original.
Received the Mergress really quick. Very well made and it looks really nice with the stainless knob. Compared to the progress it has slightly better balance and the real benefit is the reliability of the settings. It is always spot on. Good service from Bullgoose shaving, communcation is quick. Happy with the Mergress, very good shave.
The customer service at Bullgoose is superb. Please believe me when I say this: in this era of rip offs, unanswered e-mails and phone calls etc., these guys will restore a vibe of optimism. Maybe the world will be all right. I love this razor. Every Merkur I have had had poor quality. They shave great but look at the bumpy finish. I prefer a higher standard of quality. Any how I wanted an adjustable. I don't know how Mer does it but the finish on this Mergress is flawless. So is everything else about this razor. I cannot find words to express how good this buying experience has been. Thank you Bullgoose.
I don't typically write reviews, but I purchased this razor and want others to know how much I appreciate it. I have a number of razors to include the Merkur 34C, the 37C Slant and even a Gillette1959 Fatboy; this razor shaves better than all of the hands down. If you are hesitating because of the price, you don't need to worry, you will not regret this razor. It is incredibly well made and very nicely balanced. This razor doesn't just look and feel good, but more importantly provides the closest shaves I've had. Make the purchase ... you won't regret it.
This is a fantastic shaver. Even on dial setting 3 it's pretty aggressive, but dial setting 1 is very mild. It's the best of both worlds. I haven't shaved on settings 4 or 5 yet, but I may try it out soon. Regardless, the modifications made to the original Merkur Progress are done very well and this shaver is worth the little bit of extra money.
I have used the Mergress only twice, but I like it already very much. Very smooth and efficient, also it gives you the feeling that it is not going to bite you, which makes for a very relaxing shaving experience. I have used setting 3 for the first pass and 2 for the rest, but I will try 4 and 3 next time. I am using a Polsilver blade, one of my favorites. I am glad I bought it, and many thanks to Phil for the usual great customer service.
I will start saying that the Mergress was my most expensive safety razor so far; well over 200 dollars delivered, import taxes and handling fee paid. Versus the price for the Progress in Norway is on the 55 dollars range.
Does it shave better than the progress? – No, it does not, they are exactly matching razors.
Does it look better? - Yes it does, much better. I love the shave quality my Progress gives me, but I always thought, how ugly the plastic adjustment knob was. But remember; the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
Sincerely I don’t understand why Merkur do not change it at the production line. Do they hear the costumers?
Would I buy it again? Yes, I would.
If you are unsatisfied with how the progress looks like, buy the Mergress.
This costs over twice the price of the virtually identical Merkur Progress (500 short handle/570 long handle) Safety Razor. Shaves are the same so if thats your criteria then save money and get the standard factory edition! Now what do you get for the extra money, well quite a lot actually! The most obvious is the matching machined adjustment knob and it adds some weight as its now a weightier102g and it feels fabulous! A bonus is in re-assembly they have made a buttery smooth adjustment and aligned the first setting to 1 and the alignment mark. My Progress 500 its aligned to the + so is about half a tun off and it cant be fixed without completely disassembling. Ill point out, that this makes no difference to the shave at all. Its just different between factory razors as you never know if someone else's 3 is the same as yours when set to 3 but with the Mergress they would be identical at the same setting! The shave is perfect and I love being able to dial in settings between passes too but that applies to both the factory as well as the Mergress too.
Now to the knob, its just perfection itself. Made from machined CNC stainless steel thats been polished to match the rest of the razor and its what merkur should be making anyway but wont. While 3D printed knobs are available on etsy you need to still swap it over and align it either yourself or send it to someone knowledgable to do it for you, so this is a great offer on a finished and bullgooose guaranteed warranty. Something a DIY wont give you... The gap between a DIY and the Mergress is small but the extra fit, finish, looks and guarantee is worth the small premium in my opinion!
The last thing is this is a 2 piece razor, so its easy to assemble with wet hands and as its not a TTO (twist to open) you dont have the vagrancy of butterfly doors.
In conclusion you can watch my review of mine on youtube (steve, the daily shaver)
The build and finish of this Mergress razor is excellent. The adjustments are on mark, smooth and tight. The performance of this razor is flawless. A beautiful razor.
Im very happy with my New Mergress, to much beautiful razor than original Progress, perfect manufacture of knob, smooth an precise piece.
Without doubt, awesome razor
Mergress....progress...mergress...progress, both are great razors that give a wonderful shave. To some people, including myself, the look and feel of the new adjustment knob makes the razor much more attractive than the standard plastic progress knob. The mergress set to 4 has now become my go to head shaving tool. This one is a keeper. On another note, Bullgoose is a wonderful company to do business with. Fast shipping, great customer service, email updates. Great experience from start to finish. Thanks.
I've been after one of these beauties for 3 or 4 years! These really are an improvement on the Progress & there isn't much wrong with that razor, however, this is a cut above. ( no pun intended!) Super service from Bullgoose with a couple of surprises in the box! Thanks for that! If you get this item sent to the UK be prepared for a custom charge. That's no criticism of Bullgoose at all. Can't say enough good things about Bullgoose & will buy from them again. This razor is the bomb,as you Americans are fond of saying, & one needs one in ones collection as it will soothe your Razor Aquisition Disorder, for a few days anyway.
I have not tried a Progress, which is a bit unfair, but to me this razor is a first class tool and approaching perfection. This is my second Mergress, the first being an older long handle, and I am already discovering that I prefer the short handle for balance. I look forward to spending more time with it. Thank you "Mer" and thank you "Bullgoose!" Christmas in July!!!!
Wonderful feel, look and balance. I chose the regular handle and I love it, but I will definitely be adding to my collection with one of the longer handles on their next release. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
Took a little while to reach me, but that was due to customs delay and not the fault of mongoose, however I am extremely happy with the performance of this razor i have only been using it for a few days, I have several other razors, but the mergress is quickly becoming my favourite. Thanks so much for the great service.
I bought the Mergress based on reviews, and I am glad I did. I set it on 3 1/2 and get a very smooth shave with no nicks. I may have to sell my collection of vintage Gillettes. Start low and adjust. Very well made razor.
i've only had the Mergress for a week, but am thoroughly enjoying it. so far i've been playing with the adjustments which is the most fun. the balance and weight is great and i don't have to apply any pressure as the weight of the head does this. the blade angle is also easy to get used to and have been enjoying a wonderful shave. the quality of the razor is also very well machined. i don't think i will be buying any more razors!
The Mergress Adjustable Safety Razor has instantly become my favorite razor. I now use almost every day (using a Gillette Sharp Edge blade). The blade angle seems perfect. I use setting # 2 for my first pass and then adjust to a #1 for the against the grain pass. The high polished finish is really nice. I highly recommend
this razor is the best adjustables razors i have ever used....its sweet in every way you could you can think of..start @ #2 and you will find the exact sweet spot....thats just right for you..and has a nice weight to it..all good
I think this is one of the best razors currently available on the market. It looks great and I can adjust it to match how I want to shave on any given day. I never used the original Progress, but I'm very happy with the aesthetics and comfort of the Mergress.
I have not used a Progress but I am very happy with the Mergress. One of the most comfortable Double Edge Razors I have used and I have tried around 30 so far.
So glad I jumped at the opportunity to get a Mergress. It's a beautiful razor and it's performance has made it one of my favorites! It get me a bbs on those spots no other razor seems to.
The Mergress gave me the easiest shave I have ever had- right out of the box. Start with a low number, finish with a higher number. Simply the best.
The Mergress is a well executed improvement to the popular Progress. The adjustment knob is a perfectly polished match to the razor and adds a touch of balance. I purchased this one for my son who is a new shaver but I could not resist a few shaves with it. Setting the razor to the desired efficiency level I was pleased with the overall handling and shave quality.
The very concept of adjustable ushers visions of something futuristic and perhaps over kill. Mergress is more Art Deco and aesthetically pleasing to the most steadfast traditionalist. That it delivers a fantastic shave doesn't hurt either.
The Mergress is both work of art and fine shaving tool. I prefer to use it on a lower setting (2 to 2.5) and find it to be really efficient at removing the stubble without feeling aggressive. Of course, if you like aggressive, just open it up a bit and it will accommodate you. This razor is truly the RAD killer.
