I have now purchased 2 of these razors. One for daily use and one for my travel kit. That should tell you something. After I purchased, used and loved the first one I had a chance to borrow a Rex Ambassador for comparison. Although the Rex delivered a smooth precise shave I didn't feel that it was a better shave than the Mergress. The fit and finish of both razors was comparable but I liked the handle length and balance of the Mergress Xl better. I also prefer the smooth surface of the Mergress to the highly knurled handle of the Rex. It just feels good in my hand and is easy to control. It's also much easier to clean and keep clean. All in all, of the 15 razors that I have owned and used the the Mergress is the hand down winner.
This is a beast of a razor. I've wanted one since the mods were started and decided it was time to give one a go. The quality is typical of Merkur; the plating is nice for now and there are a few tool marks on the adjustment plate but pretty clean everywhere else. The Mergress mods are well done and really bring this razor up a few notches from the base model of a Progress (long or short). Anyone who has bought from Phil at Bullgoose knows that he's a great seller and will have your purchase to you swiftly. I'm long past my "I'm DE shaving, let's buy it all" phase and am pretty well pleased all the way around on this one. As long as the plating holds up, this one should last me for a good long time.
Great razor. Very happy. Thank You very much
Nice heavy razor with excellent length. Excellent performance and smooth.
I gave this to my brother for his birthday.
He enjoys it almost as much as I enjoy mine. Suffice to say, he has not touched his cartridge razor since.
An excellent unit with a good weight allowing the razor to do the work sans hand pressure. If its a daily shave I use setting number 1: If I shave on the second day I use setting 2: and so on - hence if I haven't shaved for 5 days I begin with setting 5. If I require a super smooth shave I complete three passes the end result equals no burning, red areas or tender skin. I highly recommend this razor for novices through to expert users with heavy/tough stubble. Thank you BG for a great product backed up with an efficient and speedy delivery to Australia, more than just impressed.
I bought the short bronze one for travel and wish they had released the long one with brass although the Stainless Steel is more scratch resistant. This is a heavy razor, adjusts smoothly out of the box and is well indexed.
and it shaves very well too. When I got the razor, I opened up the box, took it out, and just admired it for a while. It's that pretty. Finally I thought I better do something with it so after figuring out how to take the cap off (unscrew the adjustment knob counter-clockwise until the cap comes off), I loaded it up with a Feather Stainless blade and then went in to shave. I set the knob to 3 and shaved my head, as usual against the grain. Great results. Then I set the knob to 5 and did my face. With my two favorite razors, the Asylum RX and the Alumigoose, both SE razors, I get BBS results in two passes. With the Mergress I found that I need three to get the same results. Second pass was on 3 and the third was on 1, and on 1, it felt even milder than my old favorite, the AS-D2. I got the feeling that, depending on the adjustment setting and blade choice, this razor can be whatever one chooses to make it. It's a very beautiful and versatile tool.
When I bought my Mergress, I also bought one for my best friend who still uses his old original Gillette adjustable from 40 or 50 years ago. He's been using his Mergress now for almost two weeks and he absolutely loves it.
As usual, dealing with Bullgoose Shaving was a pleasure.
My husband loves the razor. Product delivered as described. Excellent customer service. Highly recommended and will do business with this vendor again.
This is the best razor I've ever tried. I have always dreamed of a mild and efficient shave without irritation/nicks'n'cuts etc. And now it seems that I finally have found the perfect solution!
My first DE razor was the Muhle R89. It was good, but nothing special, and I wanted something smoother, more skin friendly)
For a very long time, I was thinking about buying the Feather AS-D2, because it is considered the mildest razor out there. But the reviews are controversial, so it took me almost a year before I decided to buy it. I was hoping it would save me from "bad" shaves forever. But the miracle didn't happen. It was good - with some razor blades better, whether some gave irritation and lots of nicks and cuts. So after using it for half a year, I almost never achieved a great shave. Have to mention that I always shave against the grain, after going with the grain.
So recently I have thought to myself that I should try one more DE razor and then give up for sure. And the idea was to take something that you can at least adjust, so you can try some different options. I was thinking of buying Progress, but then accidentally found out about Mergress, did some research on the WEB, and took the risk.
And now I can tell you it was 100% worth it, now I'm achieving the best shaves ever! Love it!
I waited too long to get this razor, wish I hadn't now. This is a superb shaver, balance and weight are perfect for me. Fit and finish is top notch. The action is smooth and precise with little or no free play. Gives me a close, comfortable shave. Very happy. Of course the folks at Bull Goose are great to deal with.
If you like a heavy razor with a long handle then the Mergress XL is for you. So far I've used it with Voskhod and Polsilver blades and it works exceptionally well with both for me. I really enjoy using a quality device such as this. Well worth the upgrade from a regular Progress.
This razor is a step above the standard Merkur Progress. Both the feel and the appearance are greatly improved. I really enjoy this piece of fine machinery. I have found that I can start on 4 and go to 3 and maybe 2 if I really want to buff it!
Best d.e. razor on the market in my opinion. This mod makes a great razor better.
Very nice high quality instrument. Has a nice heft to it. Shaves nice on number 2 for me. I am glad I can add it to my rotation.
The 'Mergress' modifications are a definite improvement to a good razor. All the upgrades are exactly as advertised. The improvements ensure that blade gap settings can be reliably controlled.
I own a Progress razor and it always gave me a good shave. The Mergress razor takes the Progress design to a much higher level. The weight and balance are fantastic. This is a great razor a worth the price.
I own a Progress, and, whilst it's a good razor, it lacks a couple of things, especially balance. The Mergress removes any shortcomings, and turns this razor into a great shaver. It also improves its looks. Excellent service from Bullgoose rounds it all off.
This is one of my top razors naw it gives a barber shave worth the money and fast shipping thanks guys.
After using the normal Progress for quite a while now, I was nevertheless surprised how much better the "tuned" Mergress is. Now it's the razor it should've been all along. Was it worth the over $170 that it cost in the end to get it to Germany? Absolutly yes! My normal Progress is now for sale. It's a very nice razor, but compared to the balance and precision of the Mergress, there is no comparison. Highly recommended!
A no problem transaction, pleasure to do business with these guys! It was a gift for a friend, so I have no feedback yet on performance.
I have been looking for a Murgress for some time and found it here on the BullGoose site. This razor is the right weight and is a smooth shaving, easy to use, easy to adjust, and easy loading razor. This two part razor is just great. I am using this razor almost three times a week, I shave four times a week. Thanks for free shipping! I highly recommend this razor to anyone, first time or long time wet shaver.
I like the razor very much. Very smooth shave, and so far I love the adjustability. Now up to about 3 and very close shave!
My only nitpick is, because it is rather heavy, it can slip, so I would like to see some knurled texture to the mid/upper handle.
I would rate it 4.5 stars ....
In a word - amazing. The Progress by Merkur is, in my humble opinion the finest adjustable DE razor on the market. The Mergress takes the Progress to the next level. Beautifully crafted, fine tolerances, great balance and heft - good grief one would be a fool not to own one of these, let alone make it their #1 razor. I asked Merkur if they'd consider making a stainless steel version of their amazing razor and sadly, they said "no." Eric (Mer) has responded by doing what Merkur won't and improve upon an already great product, making it even better - replacing the Progress' cheap plastic knob with a finely machined steel one. He's tightened up the razor's tolerances - and with undeniably excellent craftsmanship. The ONLY way to improve on what Eric does is to make the entire razor stainless. In the meantime, I'm saving up to purchase another one. Kudos to Eric!!
I have Mergress and Progress razors. Heads are identical. Mergress handle is heavier, very nice in the hand. Beautiful balanced, creates a comfortable and very smooth shave and does not require pressure. Calibration is much more convenient than in Progress. To my mind, there is only one negative point: availability.
This is a serious piece of equipment that could be your one and only razor. It will meet your every need.
Very smooth shave. I leave it on 5 it's agressive but very smooth as a daily shaver. Have just about every razor you could think of. By far the smoothest shaving razor I own. It's not scary aggressive, the weight of the razor is nice. I prefer shorter handle, but the weight is nice in the XL . You do need to rinse more often , head design doesn't really allow the soap to pass through . Overall great purchase and great razor , cmon guys we really don't need half the shaving gear we own lol. Spend the cash ... Well worth it
I been using my mergress since the day I received two weeks ago. I shave every day.
My loved Mongoose is not getting any love lately along with the rest of my other razors, including 1 custom straight. Highly recommended! So far I had used 3 different blades and it works pretty good with all three. Even with the carbon Treet blade gave a very smooth and burn free shave. Last but not least I had to mention that the customer service at Bullgoose its first class! My package was shipped really fast and very well protected. Thanks Bulllgoose team.
The Mergress XL is the winner - at the top of my list. The Mergress is a heavyweight DE with wide scale adjustment via an extended adjustment knob. With a great lather, new Feather blade, and on the most aggressive setting, I stopped after the first trip down from the sideburn to make sure I had made contact. It is that smooth. First pass on most aggressive, next pass against the growth with the same course adjustment. No nicks, gouges, or cuts. The weight, angle, and feel of the Mergress XL is perfect for my shaving, and it looks great in the stand, polished and ready for the next trip around the course.
Great razor. I bought the standard Mergress about a month ago, and enjoyed the smooth shaves I was getting. I decided to add the XL to my collection and I am glad I did. It fit my hands better and I liked the larger adjustment knob.
I personally consider the Mergress as one of the best razors in my collection and I even find it shaving more comfortable than a Merkur FUTUR, or Merkur VISION.
Well made- but in use I'm not so sure.
I've been shaving with straights for a couple of years, along with an occasional shave with a Mongoose. All excellent. I found the Mergress to be a bit harsh- even set at '2' in comparison.
The jury is still out- It would be great for a quick shave in the morning when time is tight, perhaps I should try another blade instead of the Astras supplied (although they work great in my Weber for instance)
Don't mean to be negative, but as the title says- unsure!
This razor is simply the best adjustable razor on the market in my opinion. Workmanship is elegant and excellent and the razor shaves smoothly regardless of level of aggressiveness chosen. I like the heft and feel of the Mergress XL model. Highly recommend!
Excellent razor. Have an old Merkur version which was much harder to use. Had short handle and satin finish which made changing the settings difficult when wet. This is much better and the weight and heft is much better. Excellent value. Have several razors which cost over twice as much not as good.
As usual, excellent service from the BullGoose team!
Easy the best safety razor I have purchased. It is the Rolls Royce of safety razors! I have sensitive skin and could do a 4 pass. I did 4 the first time because I loved using it so much. I did a 5 for WTG then a 3 and a 1 ATG. Buy one of you get an opportunity!
I own all three versions of the Mergress, along with other top end razors. The XL has been difficult to obtain. The wait was worth it.after using it now for three weeks it is my favorite of the three versions. The weight and heft are just right. Any blade I use works because of the adjustable settings. The XL has become my daily driver.
The service from Bullgoose was excellent. I received my razor the next day after placing my order, my compliments to Phil and his staff.
I've wanted a Mergress XL for some time now and I was very happy to see it in stock here on BullGoose. The price was good and I made the purchase. I received the razor in less than a week. The razor is well made and has excellent heft. It shaves well and simply looks great! The Mergress has already made the short list of my favorite safety razors.
Wow! Where to start? I heard that these would be available soon at BGS, signed up, and was lucky enough to get one. The razor is smooth yet very efficient. I like to use it on 3.5. It's also one of the few razors that a Rockwell blade works in for me. If you travel, it fits perfectly in the Dovo 'T' sheath. I have large hands and prefer a slightly heavy razor and the Mergtess XL is perfect. The long-handled Mergress was not available when I got my XL, but I believe I made the right choice. Since mine is an earlier model, it has the black adjustment dot. It would be nice if they made a dot modification kit (DMK) so it would be BullGoose blue. Overall, a FANTASTIC razor!!
At first glance this thing is stout. Extremely adjustable, easy to change blades. The upgrades made to this razor are way worth the extra $ spent. Paired up with Feather blades this will be my go to razor from here on.
This is an excellent razor, solid with nice weight and the fact that it is adjustable is such a plus. I love aggressive razors and with this guy I can dial it up to meet my needs.
Also I can't say enough about the service at Bullgoose. My experience to date with their efforts to meet my needs has been exceptional.
I think I purchased this razor more out of curiosity based on the legend and lore I've read over the years. So when the opportunity presented itself I pounced on it. I loaded the razor with a PermSharp blade, complements of Phil, set the dial to 2.5 and hoped for the best. To my amazement the above combination glided across my face removing my morning stubble with ease. It outperformed my go to Mongoose and has been the only razor I've used in the past 3 weeks. The legend is true and I highly recommend this shaving tool.
The Merkur Progress is my go-to adjustable. It allows me to fine-tune different brands of blades for the best shave. The Mergress treatment not only replaces the stock plastic adjustment knob with a metal one, it also smooths out the action considerably. I love my Mergress...it's worth every penny I paid for it.
