In almost sixty years of shaving I find the AS-D2 to be the finest razor that I have used. A Gillette Aristocrat previously occupied that distinction. But that classic now sits in a box with such notables as a Gillette Adjustible and Super Speed, several Schicks, two Merkurs, a Mongoose and more, too numerous to mention. The designation "safety" razor was coined for this instrument, in my opinion. Safe and smooth shaves have been obtained with such blades as Feather, Gillette Blue, Astra and others. This razor has balance in handling, precision in razor-blade fit, and gliding in cutting. A two pass shave, followed by a cold water splashing and an alum block finishing results in a no-nick experience, without failure. In my opinion, it is also pleasing to the eye as I look at it sitting on a towel next to a tube of Palmolive cream, a RazoRock synthetic brush and a Georgetown scuttle. For me, this is an incomparable razor.
This was my second DE razor, the first being the EJ DE89. I bought the razor (from Bullgoose) because I wanted a stainless steel razor and liked the looks and the design of the head (very sleek). At first I was not able to shave with the razor because it was too mild. I contacted Feather and they had me send it to Japan (at their expense) to check the head. They sent it back saying it was fine. I was about sell it but then decided to give it another go. There is a learning curve with this razor. If not angled correctly, it won't cut, or won't cut completely. Once you get the angle right, it works amazing. Does the job with minimal or no razor burn. I cannot imagine going back to something like the DE89. I continue to refine my technique. My favorite blade is the Kai because it doesn't have any sticky goo on the blades, so it doesn't make the razor head sticky.
