Asylum Rx Single Edge Razor -Made in the USA
The Asylum Rx Single Edge Razor was designed exclusively for BullGoose Shaving by a product engineer in Los Angeles, Ca. The razor was designed to be nimble, well balanced, highly efficient and consistent -partly attributable to the low profile head and the tongue and groove design that secures the blade and allows the two pieces of the head to slide together elegantly.
The razor is machined out of a solid block of 303 stainless steel to extremely tight tolerances in the heartland of the United States. If you are looking for a razor that can give you a BBS shave in two passes and without irritation, this is your candidate.
The Asylum Rx is designed to be used with the following blades: Kai Titan Mild, Kai Titan Mild with Guard, Kai Titan Original, Feather Professional and Feather Pro-Guard. Blade changing is so easy that you do not even have to take the razor apart.

The engineering and ergonomics are faultless. Weight is perfect as is balance. The finish is superb. I found changing blades to be trouble free. No problem with rust, which in any case would come from the blade not the razor (yes stainless will rust given the right, or wrong, conditions but in all my years using stainless razors this has not happened). So far I have not achieved quite the same quality of shave that I get from my ATT SE1, but very nearly. As my technique improves I am certain that this will be the best razor that I own.
I can only add my voice to the others here about how well this razor shaves. Overbladed on my first shave, but had the knack by the second. My quibbles are with the material and the blade changing. Neither criticism is enough to detract from a five star rating.
About the material. Stainless steel falls down in two respects. The mass is high, which makes it more difficult to control than a razor of lower mass. Now, I can already feel the flames about this, about how the high mass makes it easier to control. Can't agree.
Second, stainless will rust with a wet blade left in it, and rust badly. My Above The Tie razor got ruined like this. It's a pain removing the blade after every shave and drying the razor. It is because of this problem that iKon and OneBlade coat their razors.
The blade changing. They go in easily enough, but removing a wet blade is an adventure. Remember, these are injector blades, at least the Feather Professionals I use; they are not supposed to be handled in the first place. When wet, blades stick to the bottom plate, and great care is required not to slice'n'dice the fingers.
Criticisms aside, the thing shaves like a straight, with the protection of a blade guard. With good beard prep, a good brush, good soap, and good technique, you can shave very close with two passes and some clean up of problem areas. There's no call to shunt aside your straights or your DEs, but this razor will make you smile. Just be sure not to let it rust.
I couldn't help being impressed by the quality of workmanship, design conception and materials used for this single edge.
It truly delivers a BBs in two passes as promised. Its weight and balance feel in the hand are perfect. There is a learning curve however to be mastered like with every precision engineered equipment, but once mastered the shaving experience of this razor is second to none.
I bought a second one in case Phil decides to discontinue at some point or something happens to this one.
Now I'm thinking to put all my other DE razors on the bay as I don't think they will be getting any more use.
Thank you Phil for creating my dream razor.
I have been strictly a DE for over 50 something years adding a straight every once in awhile. My hands are shaky these days so straights are out of the question because I want to live. I have been using the RX now for a few weeks without interjecting a DE (I shave 7 days a week). I am delighted that I can get a straight razor feel, a close, smooth and efficient shave. I'm not giving up my DE's, but their going to have to make room for a new friend. The RX is Excellent shaver, I played with a few different blades, used a good soap and used light pressure, I couldn't be any happier.
A very well made razor. Solidly built, but above average aggressive. Head maneuverability is almost the best in the market. Loading the blade needs care. For sensitive skins, make sure to install a mild SE blade first. Real razor, not a toy. Service from BullGoose was excellent.
Sure the Asylum is a very machining finish quality Razor, but my King Cobra gives me a smoother, closer and comfortable shave after two days with the same feather pro blade in this two Razors.
First off, I will say that, in agreement with others who have posted here, there can be a learning curve when picking up the Rx after having shaved with a cartridge, DE or even another SE. It's definitely heavier than some of the recent market entrants (e.g., RazoRock, Colonial). And its introduction follows on the heels of some REALLY good razors with multiple release improvements, such as the Cobra and Mongoose.
For me, however, the Rx provides a very unique experience. I'll explain.
For one, the weight is heavier than most entrants, but the balance between head and handle is why I think it's outstanding. We all talk about "shaving a balloon" but I think that's an over-simplification, particularly for some of the recent aluminum and other releases. In this case, you really don't want to apply too much pressure, because the razor almost "sticks" to your face. That in itself helps avoid nicks or weepers from over-shaving.
Secondly, the blade really is embedded in the razor. I'm not sure how to explain that - there is no chatter, no movement, and you will find the right angle after a few shaves. I recommend, as always, great face prep - ample brush-on-face, good wetness and slickness. I face lather. I lather and shave cold, no pre-showers, no pre-glycerine. The work for me is in the lather-on-brush, and then brush-on-face. My beard is wickedly tough and multi-dimensional, my skin soft. I love DEs when the blade is really fixed, such as the iKon Shavecraft Tech and many of the slants out there. I don't need an aggressive razor, but I do need good blade curve without chatter. I think the SEs are superior in many cases.
My advice? I think your choice of razor depends on your experience and appetite to try something different. Would a rookie or cartridge shaver be up for the Rx? I think it depends on the individual. I love it though.
Effortless, sensational shave from first use and just keeps getting better. Well worth price!
Best razor I've owned. It took a few days to find the right blade for my beard, but once I did I knew this would be my go-to razor for many years. Love the fit and finish-it's superbly crafted-and the weight is perfect. Phil has truly given us a masterpiece.
The razor is the right weight and the angle is perfect for the perfect shave. Great design
Superbly designed, superbly machined an gives a sensational effortless shave. Would not change a thing.
Enjoy using the razor. It has changed the way I shave.
Right now the most precise razor , be it single, double edge, or injector to hit the market. The machining and precision tolerances are unheard of in an everyday device such as a razor.
All of that would be meaningless unless it delivered a good shave which it does.
As an owner of many razors, the Asylum has become my instant go-to favorite. The weight of the head, combined with a solid handle makes for a very comfortable fit in the hand. I must confess, that I am a bit of a wuss, and have been using Kai and Feather guarded blades. Both worked well. In 2 weeks, have had only 2 small nicks. Very smooth after a WTI and ATG shave. The head even allows a close shave under the nose. Changing the blade is a snap, and once seated, the blade does not move.
Would heartily recommend!!
Let me first start with the amazing shipping time. I ordered my RX on Friday late afternoon more like evening. It was at my door Monday Noon!!! What an amazing razor the minute you hold this razor you will hear the music start playing in your head once you shave with it it becomes more like a symphony although everyone is raving about the feather knife which I have tried I found out that the Kai captain pink works miracles for me. Got a that -BBS shave everyone is talking about with both knives but found a lot less irritations with the Kai Pink. I recommend this razor to all wet shaver enthusiasts to try. Well made Phil. I only wish you can have in the future a longer handle option to buy.
Are you sure this razor isn't made in Germany? Craftsmanship is equal to my Pils 101 NE but the shave is superior. Even with a guarded Kai blade the shave is BBS. The Porsche of razors.
In my opinion this is the best single-edge razor on the market today - significantly so, at least for my sensitive face and course wiry beard.
Context: I've had the good fortune of being able to own many razors, which includes a number of custom-made straight razors and over the years dozens of DE and SE razors. I also hone straight blades and have a very persnickety attitude toward blade efficiency and perfect blade bevel smoothness and refinement.
I have owned just about every popular SE razor brand on the market: Cobra, Mongoose, ATT-SE, Feather, and several vintage SE collectibles. Each one of these razors have certain qualities, but for me the Asylum Rx really stands out for - engineering and machining finish-quality, very high efficiency, but with outstanding smoothness, maneuverability and handling.
With the Asylum Rx I get super close shaves with no irritation, which can be a real trouble prone area for me. Because the blade rest so securely, perfect head and blade angle, and a narrow blade gap, there is no noticeable blade or head harmonic-distortion (chatter or vibration) the Asylum razor shaves like a custom near-wedge 6/8 straight razor - which is truly an amazing balance of maximum blade efficiency and very low aggression feel on skin. When the blade angle is correct against the face and vibration is nearly non-existent the blade does all the work and the beard cuts like melting butter.
Con: If you're not use to a SE razor especially with a larger and substantially thicker blade than a typical DE disposable you will need some practice and patience. (Regardless of the brand or model)
My advice, don't maneuver and buff like you might with a mild DE razor, treat the SE razor like a straight blade - linear direction strokes, slow and longer strokes, stretching skin, etc.
Watch some straight razor videos like Anthony Esposito and glean techniques from others.
PRO: This razor rocks and is a winner right out of the gate! ...
This razor was worth wait! Perfectly manufactured, it is a pleasure to use. I prefer the Feather mild blades for a smooth, gentle shave.
I agree that the workmanship is excellent however I am still working to achieve the stellar shave that others have reported. For me it has not performed much better than my other top line razors.I agree that it is quite good and perhaps I need to keep working on different techniques, but I overall expected more.
Without a doubt the best shaves of my life. Balance, ease of changing blades and the design makes for a ruthlessly efficient job. I've used Captain Titan Mild and the Feather Pro Blades. I'm tending toward favoring the Feather blades, but both deliver great performance. Bravo to Phil and all who made this elegant beast of a shaver.
A few years back I saw the plastic model on the forums and was very interested, now I have one and I'm very pleased with it. Of all the modern SE's I've tried this is by far the best for me.
The RX is one of the highest quality razors I have ever seen. The attention to detail, design and production is PERFECT. I have followed the development of this product from the start and was lucky enough to get one the 1st day they hit the market! Still learning the correct angle but is going to be the ONE!
Again this is the finest product I have owned! Nice work Phil!
I have a couple reviews on The Shave Nook and on the Facebook Group. My favorite comparison is the review where I compare the Rx to one of the best and most expensive sports cars in the world, the Porsche 918 Spyder. There's just no comparisons out there!
Fantastic razor, I have several other SE razors but the Asylum razor is the best. I find it very comfortable in the hand.
I get a closer shave with less effort with the Asylum razor.
Best single edge razor on the market great quality build great shave beautiful razor
I will not compare the Rx with the One Blade. The One Blades unique pivoting head makes for a completely different type of razor. I will compare it to my experience with All the Mongoose razors , Cobras and ATT SE.
Possibly, because the head is smaller than the other SE I have used the shave went much quicker than shaves with the other razors. That sucker just whizzed over my face. I did a three pass shave with a little buffing in my problem areas. The result was a fast clean shave with no shave burn. I did have 3 small weepers at the end of the shave. I attribute the weepers to my own ignorance. As stated before I did not have the angle down for the first half of the first pass. It is a heavy razor and I think I probably pressed a bit too hard. Finally. I have a light beard and sensitive skin. Weepers on a first shave with a new blade are not uncommon for me with any razor.
The RX is much milder than the Aluminum Mongoose. and even a bit more milder and more comfortable than the SS versions. Based on one shave I would rate the Rx over the Mongoose. The RX is very similar in feel and shave quality as the King Cobra. The Rx also compares favorably with the regular Cobra. Advantage Rx as to loading and holding the blade firmly in place. That is once you figure out how to load the RX. Remember the Rx has 3 pieces. After that it is a no-brainer on loading. The Rx held the blade perfectly aligned with no smile.I had to give a slight edge to the RX over the ATT SE as well. This last remark is simply based on personal preference. I find the ATT a bit aggressive. In addition I like the narrower head on the RX as compared to the head on the ATT. Both razors are definite keepers and will find their way into my rotation.
After a few more shaves I will try and evaluate the Rx further.
Those of you who have not received your RX yet hang in there it is worth the wait.
In the past six years I was lucky to try almost every type of contemporary straight, single edge, or double edge razors. Some were good for me, some not so much. Some looked awesome, but shaved less than OK, some looked not really good, but shaved exceptionally well. The Asylum Rx Single edge razor is the ONE. Looks ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, shaves ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY.
Phil, you really did it with this razor. It arrived today just in time for the daily shave. First impression was: beautiful design, flawless finish, easy to use. This all carried through to the first shave using Kai Captain Titan Mild. That was one beautiful shave. No awkwardness to the razor at all, providing a smooth, very comfortable shave. I couldn't be happier!!!!
I received this razor recently and the 1st thing that jumps out is the overall design. Slick, clean lines and very hefty but well balanced. Blade loading is easy, and as mentioned in the advertisements the tolerances are perfect and when tightly assembled it feels as it is just one solid piece of Stainless steel. The Matte finish is flawless. I am normally a straight razor shaver, however this is like a straight with a vertical handle. It feels like an extension of your hand, and due to the slim head profile and tongue and groove system, there is not a spot on your face of neck that will have any trace of whiskers. Also due to the blade profile, it does gather "shaving swarf" rather quickly, as I like to call it so rinse often and lather your soap a bit thinner and wetter for maximum efficiency. GREAT RAZOR, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, WILL GIVE YOU THE BEST SHAVES OF YOUR LIFE!!
