Asylum Rx Single Edge Razor -Made in the USA
The Asylum Rx Single Edge Razor was designed exclusively for BullGoose Shaving by a product engineer in Los Angeles, Ca. The razor was designed to be nimble, well balanced, highly efficient and consistent -partly attributable to the low profile head and the tongue and groove design that secures the blade and allows the two pieces of the head to slide together elegantly.
The razor is machined out of a solid block of 303 stainless steel to extremely tight tolerances in the heartland of the United States. If you are looking for a razor that can give you a BBS shave in two passes and without irritation, this is your candidate.
The Asylum Rx is designed to be used with the following blades: Kai Titan Mild, Kai Titan Mild with Guard, Kai Titan Original, Feather Professional and Feather Pro-Guard. Blade changing is so easy that you do not even have to take the razor apart.

Customer Reviews
I have had my RX for a year and continue to be super impressed. For a month on holiday in Italy I had to take a double edge razor because of the rules about carry-on luggage and razor blades. I was miserable the whole time, missing my RX. People talk about angle, but I've never even thought about it. As Nike says "Just do it". The finish and design are impeccable.
I only have 2 shaves under my belt but can tell you that the shaves were really good.
No conplaints about loading or unloading a blade even though I always remove them after shaving to prevent tea stains.
I'm really happy with my purchase. Oh, and fast shipping by the way.
The Asylum is worth every single penny! I am so glad I decided to purchase. I own a variety of safety razors and shavettes. Including an adjustable razor. Nothing compares to the Asylum. The other reviews are not kidding when this gives you a BBS! I have never had such a close shave. I have very sensitive skin and I am able to to do 3 passes with no irritation. If you are pondering whether to purchase this razor please do yourself a favor and buy it! You will not be let down.
A few months ago, I bought the Asylum Rx single edge razor and shaved with it a few times. The results were TERRIBLE!! My face was a bloody mess after each shave. Why am I giving my review 5 stars? For my first shaves, I used a Kai Titan Mild blade. Then, on the advice of Bullgoose Shaving's owner, I switched to a blade with a guard; in my case, the Feather Pro-Guard. The shave was the best I have ever had in my over 60 years of shaving. I used two passes; one WTG and the second ATG. The shave was the closest I have ever had and I had no nicks or cuts. Every shave I've had since has been as good as that first one with the Feather Pro-Guard. The Asylum Rx has become my daily go-to razor. If you decide to buy one, I suggest that you buy a pack of Feather Pro-Guard single edge blades as well. That combination as well as not applying virtually any pressure on the razor while shaving should give you the closest shave of your life, just like my shaves.
Not sorry I bought it as I appreciate the fine design although the finishing could be better. I would use care until you get the angle right as it can bite.
Once the correct angel is found, this razor takes no prisoners. A beautifully made piece of equipment, this razor gives exceptional shaves. With the lightest of touch, I can can get a BBS in two passes but I do three just because I can. Easy does it on the pressure, the weight will surprise you. Very impressed with this razor. I've only used Kai Titan Mild blades but will try others. Fantastic SE razor, don't hesitate if you're thinking about an SE. This one is all you need.
An excellent designed and well crafted razor that provides a most excellent shave. The handle provides excellent balance and the shape of the head makes finding the correct angle of the blade easy. The quality of this razor justifies the price tag and should provide a lifetime of service. I own a number of very good double edge shavers including Feather and ATT brands which are all excellent but this razor is in a class by itself!
1. A beautiful razor.
2. Very comfortable handle.
3. The head has an excellent feedback.
4. All this together gives a very effective, soft, without irritation shaving.
The razor is exactly as described by the seller. The craftsmanship is superb, the head's size is very convenient for maneuvering in different face areas - i.e. the neck or under the nose - and the handle is as long as it should be.
Because the razor is much heavier than most market SE or DE razors it needs, in my opinion, some practice even for the experienced shaver. It's significantly more aggressive than other SE razors (e.g. HAWK, CLAYMORE) and can provide a two pass BBS even if a blade with a guard is used.
Highly recommended!
Razor arrived today. Stunning! Beautifully made, great finish and the perfect size and balance. Handle has a lovely shape with good grip. The blade mechanism works easily. The best part was the shave. Castle Forbes pre-shave oil, Geo Trumper's Eucris shaving cream. I used a Feather soft guard this time just until I get used to a SE. (Kai titan mild next time). Great feel, feedback and finish, with no irritation or nicks. Finding the right angle took just a few strokes. Some complain about the packaging. It is completely fine; a nice cardboard box with a good fitting insert. Who needs more? The razor is what matters and that is first class. It joins a Feather AS D2S and a OneBlade, all different and all wonderfully made. If anyone knows of a fitting stand for the Asylum RX, I'd love to hear about it. Thank you Asylum and Bullgoose. Shipping to U.K. was pretty fast, and communication was great. Taxes and shipping meant it added up to a pretty expensive razor, but I am not disappointed!
A fantastic well made finished.
Mild but with some practice perhaps will be my favorite SE Razor.
Thanks bullgoose for this wonderful razor.
The Asylum RX is so beautiful! Machining is accurate without any defects. The lines of the object are original and very ergonomic. Once the ideal shaving angle is assimilated, the shave is gentle and effective. A big thank-you !!! to Phil who is a thoughtful and available salesman for his clients.
I love this razor! It is high quality machine , well done, good balance , and nice weight to it.
If you use a good soap, and prepare well the skin for shaving, you are going to have a smooth, no irritations, clean shave .
The only problem it has is the corners of the blade are covered as a security measure for the blade, and I can't use that part for shaving under the nose !
At first I was a bit apprehensive about the design and how wide the head was on this razor. This is a fantastic single blade razor. The build quality is excellent. It gives a very smooth shave. It's very easy to clean and change the blade. The look really grew on me overtime and now it it's one of my favorite single blade razors.
I was intrigued by the shape to begin with - I had seen nothing like it anywhere else. I loved that it was a smaller head with a longer edge for shaving. When I watched the video on how to load it, that sealed the deal. I knew it was a quality product, and placed my order. I was nervous about the "aggressive" reviews and decided to hedge my bets and order the Feeather Pro-Guard just in case! My first shave had a nick - totally my fault while learning the angle for this particular head combination. I was amazed at how well it hugged my face contours and made it easy to shave even my problem spots. The heft of the Razor coupled with the quality are a stunning combination that is very satisfying to use for daily shaving. Keep a light touch and let the razor do all the work - it almost will shave by its own if you let it.
I thoroughly enjoy everything about this razor - I believe I'm close to shaving Nirvana!! I feel I got what I paid for on this purchase. Total home run on this product and even made in the USA!!
I used to fly jet aircraft in the Navy, always striving for a precision landing. When I first used the Asylum it was like a precision landing on my face which, by the way, was still "touch and go" after a skin cancer removal, ie tender. The magnificent precision engineering made me wonder initially if I was taking a samurai to my face; but the initial pass was silky smooth almost as if I was having another fine shave at Trufitt and Hill in London.
I have yet to change the Kia blade after 12 shaves, continue to marvel at the machine-perfect design. Gee, aren't I glad I went for a flight with this beauty?
The Asylum is a really gear razor. The fit and finish and overall workmanship is amazing. It's very easy to load the single edged blades and remove when time to change. I have been through 50+ razors in the last 4-5 years to refine my shaving experience. My favorite is a Muhle 89 in Rosegold finish. Which a Kai DE blade it gives me a super smooth shave more so that the Asylum however I'm trying the Kai Mild And Kai Captain SE blades and like them both. I think I'm going to really like the Asylum enough to put in my normal rotation once I get the blade angle just right. This Asylum is a bjig investment but really is a great razor! Buy one .,.you'll be glad you did.
Great smooth shave first time. Love the head easy to find the right shaving angle and you can see where you are shaving! Recommend Kai titan mild MG blades seems like they give the smoothest shave.
Sounds like it's aggressive, but the shave is awesome.
I approached my first shave with the Asylum RX with trepidation. I had been using the Ikon "El Jefe" for serval months and achieving a wonderful and close shave but the Asylum RX caught my eye so I ordered one from Phil. Having the Ikon at the ready just in case, I lathered up and went at it with the RX. First,I must add, loading the blade was so easy I wasn't sure it was seated properly. For those not used to loading a s/e blade bileiive me it can be a challenge to seat the blade properly on some razors. My first pass went so smoothly I had to feel to see if I was removing any stubble. The second pass finished taking care of any remainder. All razors will remove facial hair when used properlly but at varying degrees of comfort. The RX was so smooth and efficient my face could not feel that I had shaved. No stinging when I applied a balm and no funky dancing after applying aftershave. There was no burn at all and I was BBS! One shave does not make a review but after using a Mongoose, Alumnigoose and the El Jefe I am confident the RX will be the go to from now on.
I have a little over 50 years of wet shaving experience,so there is very little I haven't seen or tried. That being said.I am relatively new to the single edge blade. Ever notice that when you pick up a razor and try it for the first time it just feels right? For me,the Asylum Rx does just that. It has a good weight, balance and grip. Very little learning curve was required. My shave was close, clean and comfortable and who could ask for more? I am very pleased to add this razor to my shaving razor rotation.
I read fantastic reviews on the Asylum razor and decided reward myself with this incredible razor. Pre ion engineering... Flawless in design.... And easy to manuver..the end result is the best shave ever! I own many vintage and current razors, and other than my Above The Tie Bamboo single blade... Nothing comes close to the resulting shave. I found for me the Feather Blades were too sharp and switched to the Kai and it was a perfect match... Glad I am the proud owner. My only request would be to include some manual with changing blades and the care if the razor... At this price, it should be there.. Does not effect the shave, but seems silly to not get anything but the razor and no directions.
First, it's as beautiful a razor as it is a shaving tool. Pictures do not do this razor justice. Wonderfully made and machined with exacting tolerances and a precision that is second to none. Looking at it is just virtual eye candy. The Shave it provides is straight razor shave like. The difference being that the RX has a handle. I have used the RX razor for 6 shaves. BBS in all with just a small nick and a couple weepers from shave no #1. After that, just sheer PERFECTION! No irritation, razor burn, nothing. Adjustment in angle and grip paired with the Kai Captain & Kai Mild Pink (3 shaves each blade, still plenty sharp) and it's been outstanding. I have an extensive list of razors from straights, de's in both open comb and closed, adjustables and another se that I won't mention. Haven't touched them since I've acquired this razor. Phil, you've outdone yourself. Thanks for the excellent service, and even a bigger Thank you for providing a razor that is the Cream of the Crop.....
I own almost every SE made in USA and the Rx tops them all. Build quality as good as ATT with the maneuverability of my King Cobra. I have had it only 1 week and got a BBS shave with a feather proguard in 2 passes (WTG, XTG) can't do that with any of my other shaver except the King Cobra but I can't use that everyday in fear that it will not last. I love it.
I have been using single edge razors for over 20 years, along with a couple of double edge razors. When I discovered the artist club blade razors, I realized they shaved me the best
because they are very rigid. I have used the cobra, king cobra, mongoose, allumigoose,ATT SE2, and the General. This RX razor is,by far,the closest and smoothest of the lot. The only one that comes close efficiency wise is the General but the RX is much more solidly built and much better made. Very happy with this purchase.
This review is long overdue. I've got RX when it just came ( second batch, since first has disappeared in seconds ). Terrific razor which combines Cobra slim profile head and 3 piece stainless steel construction without any moving parts. Shaves very closely, need to be respected , but once correct angle is applied it is irritation free. Cudos to Phi's persistency and drive , he single handedly brought it to live, tooks a few years starting with Huntley prototype, but result is worth it. Machinery/finish is impeccable.
To be fair, I can only compare the Asylum to the Above The Tie single edge.
The ATT is a bit more gentle and doesn't shave quite as close as the Asylum.
I do like the feel in hand with the Asylum better, in fact its feel reminds me of a Tradere. (if they made a single edge that is)
with the head being so narrow it does become more nibble but that also make it a little harder to get the blade angle.
after a few shaves I found it and I'm good.
the Asylum needs to be respected more than the ATT. All razors do..
I've been shaving with double edge for 40 years and with single edge just a couple of months.
I still have a lot to learn about single edge shaving, I am liking it and see some benefits with the single edge
I do need more time till I could say I like it better or not.
I like the razor and I would suggest it to any who wishes to venture away from double razors.
What more can I say it shaves like a dream
I am retiring my other razors. If you thinking to buy Single edge razor by the RX you will not regret. 10 Stars and the services is exelant
Without question my BEST razor. I started DE shaving about 4 years ago. I've gone through at least 3 phases of RAD hunting for the perfect razor for my style of achieving the perfect BBS shave, with the grain pass and 2 against the grain finishing passes with minor buffing. As always and similar to others, my neck is the most difficult area to get super close without some irritation or weepers. I'm most fond of my Weber, ATT H1/R1, '57 Fat Boy, Gillette SS Red Tip, and EJ DE89. Now to the Asylum. My brother and wife bought me the Asylum Rx for my 50th birthday. I have been completely invested in DE razors with more than 6,000 blades on hand for a "Razor Apocalypse" if one were to occur. Holy Smoke.... I never thought I could find another razor to match my perfect shaves. Not only does this Asylum match them but it performs the task of delivering BBS with much less effort and with more comfort. The Feather Pro blade just glides and cuts with no problem in finding the proper shave angle. Long strokes turn into shorter shaves, due to the extra width of SE blades and this razors efficiency. It cuts like my aggressive ATT H1 but feels as gentle as a DE89 or Weber. In addition, the smaller head allows for easier 'above the lip' access. The weight and balance are right-on, too. I'm not leaving DE shaving; however, a broader world of SE has just emerged. If I could only keep 1 razor in my den, the Asylum Rx would take it's rightful place. BTW, for you head shavers like me, don't fear. It'll give you that perfect shave too. In hoping that the extra blade longevity in SE blades will make SE shaving as inexpensive as DE. Off the record, the Asylum Rx has worked well with the Feather Pro SUPER. Thank You... Phil, my brother and my wife for a wonderful 50th birthday gift that's a true masterpiece.
The Asylum is the best razor i've ever tested in this two years of wet shaving. I shaved with many top quality DE and some SE but the Asylum was the best. Pair with a Kai Protouch MG blade, it gives me an extra close shave and free of any irritation or nicks. The best shaves of my life. And also the best razor for my most difficult zone, the lower neck. Other razors nicks me this zone very easy, but with the Asylum is very easy to shave this zone without problems.
I have used almost every SE razor on the market. Obviously they all have their pro and cons. Some work better with certain blades versus others. I have been using my new Asylum for several days now and due to the other reviews I decided to split the difference and start with a Kai Protouch (with guard). I received the closest shave with the least irritation of any SE or DE that I own, and I own quit a few. Becuase of the size and design I required only two passes with a couple of touch up areas instead of my usual three passes with touch ups. I have a very thick and heavy beard but very sensitive skin. Straits have also done well but I just don't have the time for the maintenance. So consider this razor a straight, without the up keep. If your face can use a Feather Pro or Progaurd then go for it; I have used those also now and although you need a softer touch, they work well also. But if you are using the razor for the first time, the Kai Protouch will work fine. The angle is very intuitive for an experienced shaver and the blade feel is terrific. Well done!!
This razor gives a clise shave the same way as a stright naw its one of my top favorites and fast shipping to thanks guts.
I have the Mongoose, ATT SE1, Colonial Razor the General, the oneblade, and now the Asylum Rx. All of them are fantastic SE razors! The Asylum is definitely one of my closest shaving razors and never lets me down! The feather professionals seem to work best for me in this razor edging out the Kai brand. Great razor!
I'd been waiting for over two years for BG Shaving to get his SE razor on the market and by the time he did I thought, do I really need another SE razor since I already had two other modern versions? But, boy am I glad I purchased one--the Rx takes shaving with a safety razor to a new level. The form, fit and function are exemplary--it's beautiful, unique and shaves perfectly. The weight is ideal because this razor demands a very light touch. There's a learning curve in loading a new blade, but there was one when I first starting using a DE razor, so it's something I'll get used to. Phil, I'm extremely happy you persisted and finally got this razor on the market--thank you.
I appreciate and admire well made instruments and machines. The Asylum Rx is just that. And an excellent razor!
Llevo 4 afeitados y la maquina muy bien,el acabado bien, se siente muy bien en la mano,es el unico monofilo que tengo pero no me hace falta otro....buena ideea Phil!!
I have used every SE razor out there. I love my King Cobra but its crap quality. I love my ATT S1, good quality and a good shave. When I came across the Asylum I loved the look and ordered. My first impressions... it's was quality. Nice weight, well thought out and attention to detail on head and handle was first class. Would I make a change? None to make, it's beautiful. Now the shave, first class and shaves as good as anything I've tried. If your reading this and thiinking of buying.....pull the trigger, it's a CLASS razor in every aspect. It you don't want to spend the money grow a beard or let the wife spend your hard earned money on nail polish. I'm from the `U.K. and it costs me far more to buy, so your getting a good deal. Also I want to add, the service form Phil was 100%
Part of the appeal of wet shaving to me is trying new and different products. I was completely satisfied with my Feather DE razor, but decided to give the Asylum Rx a try. I am very pleased with it. The quality and workmanship are both excellent and it is manufactured in the US! After some adjustments in technique, I am now getting closer and smoother shaves than I ever thought possible. The balance and feel of this razor is amazing. Areas that previously required a third pass are now shaved closely in 2 passes, some in only one. Blade life is very good - 8 shaves with either Kai Titan milds or Feather Professionals. I highly recommend this razor.
I have not had many shaves with the RX and have only used it with the Kai Titan Mild blades so far. There is a learning curve associated with it as it is definitely different than me DE razors. My first impression is that razor shaves great. I am sure that it will only get better as I improve my technique. One additional benefit is that the blades seem to last longer than DE blades. I am very happy with the razor. It is somewhat expensive but the fit and finish are exceptional. I am debating getting it plated with rhodium to give it a unique look although the mat stainless steel looks great.
Solid build quality and shaves are fantastic . Shaving and skin smoothness are like straight razor quality / feeling and within 2 passes BBS. Happily satisfied with the quality and performance of the product.
The best razor this wet shaver has used in a 40-plus-year career. Used Feather Professional. Take your time, do it the right way, listen to the razor: you'll be rewarded with a straight razor-quality ultra-smooth shave. Nicely balanced, sits well on the face, easy to position. Absolutely not a quick morning shave. Most highly recommended. Thanks to Phil for his great service and quick shipping.
The engineering and ergonomics are faultless. Weight is perfect as is balance. The finish is superb. I found changing blades to be trouble free. No problem with rust, which in any case would come from the blade not the razor (yes stainless will rust given the right, or wrong, conditions but in all my years using stainless razors this has not happened). So far I have not achieved quite the same quality of shave that I get from my ATT SE1, but very nearly. As my technique improves I am certain that this will be the best razor that I own.
I can only add my voice to the others here about how well this razor shaves. Overbladed on my first shave, but had the knack by the second. My quibbles are with the material and the blade changing. Neither criticism is enough to detract from a five star rating.
About the material. Stainless steel falls down in two respects. The mass is high, which makes it more difficult to control than a razor of lower mass. Now, I can already feel the flames about this, about how the high mass makes it easier to control. Can't agree.
Second, stainless will rust with a wet blade left in it, and rust badly. My Above The Tie razor got ruined like this. It's a pain removing the blade after every shave and drying the razor. It is because of this problem that iKon and OneBlade coat their razors.
The blade changing. They go in easily enough, but removing a wet blade is an adventure. Remember, these are injector blades, at least the Feather Professionals I use; they are not supposed to be handled in the first place. When wet, blades stick to the bottom plate, and great care is required not to slice'n'dice the fingers.
Criticisms aside, the thing shaves like a straight, with the protection of a blade guard. With good beard prep, a good brush, good soap, and good technique, you can shave very close with two passes and some clean up of problem areas. There's no call to shunt aside your straights or your DEs, but this razor will make you smile. Just be sure not to let it rust.
I couldn't help being impressed by the quality of workmanship, design conception and materials used for this single edge.
It truly delivers a BBs in two passes as promised. Its weight and balance feel in the hand are perfect. There is a learning curve however to be mastered like with every precision engineered equipment, but once mastered the shaving experience of this razor is second to none.
I bought a second one in case Phil decides to discontinue at some point or something happens to this one.
Now I'm thinking to put all my other DE razors on the bay as I don't think they will be getting any more use.
Thank you Phil for creating my dream razor.
I have been strictly a DE for over 50 something years adding a straight every once in awhile. My hands are shaky these days so straights are out of the question because I want to live. I have been using the RX now for a few weeks without interjecting a DE (I shave 7 days a week). I am delighted that I can get a straight razor feel, a close, smooth and efficient shave. I'm not giving up my DE's, but their going to have to make room for a new friend. The RX is Excellent shaver, I played with a few different blades, used a good soap and used light pressure, I couldn't be any happier.
A very well made razor. Solidly built, but above average aggressive. Head maneuverability is almost the best in the market. Loading the blade needs care. For sensitive skins, make sure to install a mild SE blade first. Real razor, not a toy. Service from BullGoose was excellent.
Sure the Asylum is a very machining finish quality Razor, but my King Cobra gives me a smoother, closer and comfortable shave after two days with the same feather pro blade in this two Razors.
First off, I will say that, in agreement with others who have posted here, there can be a learning curve when picking up the Rx after having shaved with a cartridge, DE or even another SE. It's definitely heavier than some of the recent market entrants (e.g., RazoRock, Colonial). And its introduction follows on the heels of some REALLY good razors with multiple release improvements, such as the Cobra and Mongoose.
For me, however, the Rx provides a very unique experience. I'll explain.
For one, the weight is heavier than most entrants, but the balance between head and handle is why I think it's outstanding. We all talk about "shaving a balloon" but I think that's an over-simplification, particularly for some of the recent aluminum and other releases. In this case, you really don't want to apply too much pressure, because the razor almost "sticks" to your face. That in itself helps avoid nicks or weepers from over-shaving.
Secondly, the blade really is embedded in the razor. I'm not sure how to explain that - there is no chatter, no movement, and you will find the right angle after a few shaves. I recommend, as always, great face prep - ample brush-on-face, good wetness and slickness. I face lather. I lather and shave cold, no pre-showers, no pre-glycerine. The work for me is in the lather-on-brush, and then brush-on-face. My beard is wickedly tough and multi-dimensional, my skin soft. I love DEs when the blade is really fixed, such as the iKon Shavecraft Tech and many of the slants out there. I don't need an aggressive razor, but I do need good blade curve without chatter. I think the SEs are superior in many cases.
My advice? I think your choice of razor depends on your experience and appetite to try something different. Would a rookie or cartridge shaver be up for the Rx? I think it depends on the individual. I love it though.
Effortless, sensational shave from first use and just keeps getting better. Well worth price!
Best razor I've owned. It took a few days to find the right blade for my beard, but once I did I knew this would be my go-to razor for many years. Love the fit and finish-it's superbly crafted-and the weight is perfect. Phil has truly given us a masterpiece.
The razor is the right weight and the angle is perfect for the perfect shave. Great design
Superbly designed, superbly machined an gives a sensational effortless shave. Would not change a thing.
