And, no, no one asked me to re-evaluate. I have a science and engineering background and my college science professors would have blasted me if I published a study or an evaluation based on one test result (even two for that matter). I realized I had two variables in my test, one was the soap, the other a new to me razor I was using for the first time, a 1948 Gillette #15 with a solid bar. I don't normally use a solid bar razor. I do usually use an open comb or scallop razor or a straight razor. So I re-tested with two open comb razors, one an older Gillette #15 with an open comb and the 2nd a Grand King, both shaves using the same exact blade, a Super Iridium, as my first shave. The open comb razors left some extra lubrication that I'm used to and need for my face and my shaves were very different than my initial shave with this soap and the solid bar razor. I really liked how this soap performed. As I stated in my prior review, excellent lathering, nice scent, and, after using open comb razors, the lubricity is/was very good for me with my open comb razors. Sorry if any confusion and YMMV. Oh, and to answer the Bullgoose question, I do have fairly soft water.
I am very pleased with this soap. It whips up easily into a thick, slick, and cushioning lather. And the fragrance is complex and reasonably subtle. I’m very sensitive to strong fragrances, but did not find the oud-santal scent overpowering, as have some reviewers. My only quibble, and the reason for the one star off is that the soap includes bits of apparently harder soap that are not always incorporated into the lather. Consequently, it leaves the bits on one’s face. That doesn’t affect the shave, only the aesthetics of the experience.
compared to A OS a 3 vs a 10.
My first thought on opening the very nice tin container was, "My God this stuff smells strong, why do all these guys rave about it?" I went back to the Bullgoose reviews and read Terry M.'s. So I followed his lead, took the soap into the guest bathroom, removed the lid, and let it air out for a couple of days. By then the scent was down to a mild roar so I tried my first ;shave with it. Within seconds, the Thater brush started to fill with lather and then I built up a large amount of lather in my Fine shaving mug, which I wish Phil would carry (hint, hint).. This soap gives great coverage and is very slick. I used an Asylum RX with a Feather Pro Guard blade for a two-pass BBS shave and it was terrific. No alum burn anywhere on my face or scalp, and the soap left my face feeling moisturized and soft. My wife even commented on it. I actually prefer the LPL to Czech and Speake soap, and only thing I have that beats it is Antica Barbieria Colla Almond Oil Shaving Cream at twice the price. Obviously LPL Oud-Santal is firmly established in my rotation. We live in a SE Asian country for 6 months a year and I just bought another container of this to use and leave there.
Mercy..... in full disclosure John so I am 64 years old and I’ve tried a lot of different shaving soap’s. And brevity, I guess if I paid 38 bucks for a chunk of soap I guess I would have to give it five stars just to protect my own ego Are you smiling? No, quite frankly I was not at all impressed. It’s it OK soap but honest to God, it’s a lot of hype and BS. ThereAre a multitude of damn good soaps out there for under 10 bucks. Start with the humble Bonners dad lathers up good and gets the job done. Nope, I’m not signing onto this. I shelled out 38 bucks and it was honestly a waste of money
This is a superior product. It lathers up great. Cushion, glide, slickness, post-shave are top notch. The scent is intoxicating. Treat yourself to something special with this LPL limited edition soap. You’ll be glad you did.
Love the soap, scent is very pleasing. Has notes of woods and something I would almost associate with talc, it does love water though but whips up into a good lather once you get the proportions right.
Received this about three weeks ago along with the aftershave. Upon opening the sturdy tin, I was shocked at how intense the scent was. It was almost unbearable to the point I was ready to return it. After talking with a few folks I decided to let it air out for a few days and very glad I did. It is now a favorite in my regular rotation, especially since Fall is here and Winter right around the corner as this will really be nice in the colder seasons. The scent is woody and sweet, slightly spicy with zero hint of citrus or flowers. The performance is fantastic, lathers easily in my harder water and provides excellent slickness and cushion. The supplied amount per cost is another plus, takes very little to build a good amount of lather in the bowl. Will recommend this to friends for sure. LPL scores big here as well as BullGoose for making it available. I see it's already out of stock, hope they get more in time for Christmas.
Bottom line up front: by all means do yourself a favor and by this soap.
I missed out on the original issue, and was really excited when they announced an additional batch. The soap comes in very nice and spacious steel can, and although it is not cheap, the 200 gr. of it is pretty generous amount making the price comparable to many other great artisan creations.
The intriguing and really perfume-quality scent, besides the obvious agar- and sandalwood combination, includes some sweet flowery (lavender or patchouli) sub-motifs - making it mellow and dreamy on one hand but very well-balanced by the down to earth woody components - on the other.
The soap consistency is more that of a "croap". I'd really like it to be a bit more cured at the factory - as in its present state it's very uneven mix of extremely soft and creamy substance with multiple random-sized inclusions of hard and more soap-like lumps inside of it. I actually left it open at my working table to cure for additional couple of weeks, simultaneously enjoying the great aroma. This is the reason for half-a-star reduction in my rating.
Another half a star was taken for this soap's performance in hard water. Don't get me wrong: the soap is great! But for such a great one I'd expect it to perform equally well in any kind of water, while in reality the slickness was somewhat undermined by my very hard tap water, and really revealed itself only when I used resin-softened one.
In any other aspect this soap is on par with any first tier soap I own: great and stable lather (use a lot of water - this soap is a thirsty one), perfect skin hydration, good protection and cushion effect, nice slickness (in soft water) - this soap will definitely save you a few nicks. And did I mention the heavenly bouquet already? :-)
After the shave my skin feels great, and the scent lingers for a long time - so you'd better use similarly scented aftershave.
All in all, this soap now resides in my top 5 - out of a few dozens I...
I've had my eye on this soap for a while and finally decided to give it a try. I love it! The performance is outstanding: exceptional tallow protection, easy to lather, and a silky application. The scent is old school luxury, rich and complex in an addictive way. This soap is now in my rotation with Martin de Candre, Xpec, Michell's Wool Fat, Mike's Natural Soap, C&S, and a few others.
This is good stuff, not the best, but good with value. Not as slick as Czech and Speak, but you get twice the amount for about the same price (C&S refill puck). The LPL soap comes in a great tin container too. Solid performance and well worth the price. Several reviewers mentioned how slick this soap is. It is slick, but If you want to experience something super slick, try the ABC cream from BullGoose.
5 stars.....smooth as silk
It lathers easily and quickly, does not dry out your skin, and it's slick as ice ! Also it smells fantastic. You think I'm overstating how good it is, but just lather some up. You'll see.
I have hard water and this soap along with any other made by Le Perl Lucien lather up nicely. This soap provides excellent lubrication for my Above the Tie razors and has a pleasant, masculine scent. Excellent quality for the price.
Bought Le Pare Lucien about a month ago and now have used several times. This new Oud/Sental scent is wonderful. No citrus, or floural scent here. Deep woody, earthy, slightly sweet very unique aroma. Shave quality unsurpassed by any of the 20 soaps I own. 3 pass + cleanup with ASD2 with Feather blade, BBS with very soft skin fully moisturized. Probably one of best shaves ever.
I do use both soaps and creams as most of us do, but mostly I lean toward soaps, especially tallow-based ones. Up until now I had maintained that Le Pere Lucien Original was he finest non-tallow soap out there and was in my Top 10. However when I found that a new tallow-based version was offered by LPL, I just had to try it. This new version, with the tallow, may have reached a whole new level altogether. The soap I found, was softer than previous LPL offerings making it unique, so I used my less stiff Rooney 1/1 brush for my shave. I found that the "croap" took quite a bit of water and produced an extremely thick, voluminous lather. When the water was added incrementally, I found the soap's inherent cologne-like scent enveloped the entire bathroom. The lather produced was quite slick and my razor glided over my skin with ease. I had no trouble generating lather for a 3-pass shave and if needed, could have accomplished 1 or 2 more passes if necessary. My skin was left supple and quite moisturized. A splash of Dickinson's Witch Hazel, and I found I did not need a post-shave balm as I often apply. The soap's cologne quality scent was quite lovely with its definite Oud and Sandalwood notes, (I also picked up some Patchouli in there). However, I shall primarily be using this in Fall and Winter as that is when I wear these types of wood-based scents. Nonetheless, this is a new success for LPL, an absolute home run in my opinion, and I hope this is not to be truly a "limited edition" as I will continue to buy this as long as it's available.
The shaving soap Le Pere Lucien sandal perfume is spectacular.
The tallow provides a very high skin protection and also smoothness is of a high level.
In my opinion, it is one of the best LPL soaps.
LPL has always been a leader in high quality soaps. This takes the ledgend to a new level. The scent is nothing less than spectacular. The lather and glide nothing less than spectacular. I only hope they rethink the "limited edition" monicker. I would buy again and again. Pairs unbelievably well with PAA Otra.
Lovely soap. Lather, scent , cushioning. Altogether very very nice, however it really has to be at the price. You really do get what you pay for in this instance.
Just when I think a soap's performance and scent cannot get any better, along comes a soap of this nature. LPL has hit another home run. Lather, ease of lathering, slickness, and post-shave feel are wonderful. I especially like the scent.....not like any other I have encountered. I have three other LPL soaps whose performance is excellent but the OUD-SANTAL is in a league of its own. I highly recommend this soap. As a side note, Phil continues his great customer service. I received notification the day of the order that the shipping process had started. Very satisfying from the customer's perspective.
This is the best LPL soap I ever tried. Very easy to lather, protective, and slick , but what makes this soap so unique is the scent.
Very mellow, and mystic yet modern and balanced blend of Oud and Sandalwood. Without doubt my new favorite .
Early days but can say this is a top soap. Beautifully presented, intriguing scent. Slightly troubled by the price/value equation but do not regret buying.
Cyril & Gisèle Lelégard have done superbly with this LPL! Wonderful shave with an excellent lather and a great after feeling. The BEST I've used. Thanks Phil!
A well done sweet fragrance with good performance from the LPL tallow base. The description of a sweet cigar box minus the tobacco is pretty close!
Rare to find such an incredible, right-on example of this intriguing scent, Oud/Aud (oil of Argan). I have run across this special scent before, but always on the fringe. Le Pere Lucien has nailed it, so incredibly well. This is OUD/AUD, front and center, no excuses. Warm, rich, sweet, and woody, a sweet cigar box, without the tobacco. The Santal/Sandalwood provides some foundation, but only as a base for the Oud/Aud. A bonus is the LPL Tallow recipe, so rare from them, yet so desired. LPL is one of my favorite houses for their basic formulas, and their fascinating scents. They do not disappoint here. Order one, just to have a difinitive idea of the scent Oud/Aud from here on out. Order more to use, as LPL is the best, AND with Tallow!
The scent is absolutely perfect ! Lather is dense, creamy and protective.
I've tried over 100 soaps, and this one is defenetly top 5 !
I bought 10 of them ! 2 for me, 8 for friends !
You have to buy it, you won't regret !
Great lather, beautiful scent. You can't go wrong with this soap.A great job from Cyril and Phil!!
I believe I have tried all or at least most LPL vegetal and tallow soaps, and I enjoyed them thoroughly. With this edition Cyril and Phil pushed the benchmark in smell and performance further up. The scent is sublime - delicate, yet pronounced; sophisticated, yet not overwhelming. The performance is on par with my other most favorite soaps including Eufros, Tallow+Steel, and MDC.
